We just got back from picking up my Saturn from its annual state inspection....on the way there- someone came to a dead stop in the right lane of the Rt 83/Rt30 interchange. I'm figuring the lady (yes it was an old woman) panicked because she was about to miss her exit.

The car directly behind the stopped car didn't react in time and rear ended the stopped car. My son saw what was happening- and layed on the brakes enganging the anti-lock.

He eased up at the last second and pulled right up to the car that rear-ended the old lady. I asked him why he did that and he knew that the car behind him was tailgating him and he figured that if he used all the road he had available for stopping the car-he might avoid getting rear-ended.

Smart kid.

escape right, escape left, brake and hold. In that order.

PA I imagine?

I asked him why he didn't switch lanes, he said he needs to do a better job of situational awareness. I told him that it takes a close call once and awhile so you don't become complacent.

As an aside, we paid for him to go to a Bertil Roos precision driving school when he was 18 as a graduation present. It was a good investment.

I am not a good passenger, he is one of the few people I am comfortable with being a passenger.

Total awareness is key. The fact that he knows he could work on it speaks volumes. Head on a swivel and all.

Not knee-jerking into a lane he isn't sure is clear is at least good judgement. I would only do such a thing if I was sure if I didn't do otherwise I'd be driving into a skewer.

I was just impressed on how calm he was about it and that he left as much room as possible for the person tailgating up so they didn't rear end us.

Everything about 83 needs to be destroyed and built from scratch. Easily the worst road I've ever driven. I assume you're a fellow Central PA jalop?

Yup, I live in East York...travel on 83 every day. It's gotten as bad as the Schuylkill expressway in Philly. Folks drive at 75 and follow each other almost bumper to bumper. I guess I'm not telling you anything you don't already know :-)

Th one thing I have to nitpick is that you spelled SureKill wrong. I avoid York at all costs, however. I travel 83 when we go to DC to visit the ladyfriend's sister, and the small portion that joins up with 581 though HBG. Never had a decent drive on that whole road.

The Harley plant in York is p.cool though. Did the tour with my aunt and uncle a few weeks ago.

So you are from York? I was born and raised in Red Lion. Who did you have inspect the Saturn, if I may ask?

I inherited it from my father after he passed away. I use Jim's Auto Repair for anything automotive related. He's been a family friend for years and I trust him 100%
